If I click the red record button while doing that it does record - but it makes some kind of huge file that used up the remaining space I have available on my small 160gb drive.

I tried opening the capture device itself for input to play a movie and that works fine. After the entire movie completes it is still only 44 bytes.

When I look at the output file with the file explorer the file remains at 44 bytes and never grows. The version of VLC now doesn't seem to have, at least via the GUI interface, a frame rate option, though I don't know if that makes any difference or not. I had previously specified the width and height and a frame rate of 29fps. I would open a stream, using the capture device as the input, and point the output to a file. I had been using VLC to do this successfully in the past. I had this working in an older release of a different distribution, but it wasn't working correctly in the newer version there either before I made the switch to openSUSE. I have a Pinnacle Dazzle DVC-100 USB capture device I have used to capture my old VHS tapes to disk for a media center. This section may possible be placed in the Compatible Software area.I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum - I didn't know if it would be some sort of software request/issue or a hardware oriented 'problem'. If all else fails, ways to get around the audio limitations can be placed here. Since the Pinnacle software is designed to work with the Dazzle, as long as the device is working and the drivers are installed properly, you'll always be able to get video/audio. Rather than setting up the audio capture to work with the Windows mixer, instead the audio capture is kept hidden. One of the biggest problems with the Dazzle is how the device is registered with Windows.

However, it's recommended to install it anyway since it can still be used to test that your device and drivers are working properly. The Pinnacle Studio software that comes with the Dazzle is slow, clunky, and does not record video with the quality that SDA requires for runs. Anyone with experience using this install method should edit this line to confirm.

On the context menu, click Run As AdministratorД¬onfirmation needed: While installing just the drivers should work, I did not have to resort to this to get my Dazzle to work.

Right click on your driver of choice (32bit or 64bit depending on your version of windows).

If you don't wish to install any of the pinnacle software and only wish to install the drivers:

Install the software BEFORE plugging in the device.

Although slightly pricey ($49.99 on Amazon as of 11/24/12) compared to the EzCap (roughly $32 on eBay as of 11/24/12), both are comparable devices and are more than adequate to capture SD interlaced footage. The Dazzle DVC100 is a basic USB 2.0 video capture device.
